What do you want to get out of your business?
When you’re running a business day in, day out, it can be difficult to see the wood for the trees. Sometimes you need to take a step back, work out what you really want from your business, and identify areas for improvement. The following questions will help you do just that.
Why did you start your business in the first place?
Think back to when you first decided to branch out on your own. What was it about running your own business that appealed? And how does the reality measure up? A reminder of your initial goals can be a great springboard to improving your business.
Is your business giving you the financial reward you wanted?
When you first started out, you probably had certain financial goals in mind. If the business isn’t delivering, there’s a danger it may end up feeling like ‘just a job’, rather than a rewarding venture. Re-evaluate your initial financial goals and seek advice on how to achieve them.
Are you spending your time in the most effective way?
Many business owners find themselves doing tasks they’re not best suited to, or that other people could do better and quicker. For example, if you’re doing your own bookkeeping, is that really the best use of your time? It may be worth investing in outside help, which would give you more time for the things you’re best at.
How is your work–life balance?
Part of the beauty of being your own boss is having more balance, not less. Poring over the books or catching up on emails at night – because it’s the only time you have to do it – isn’t a sustainable way to run a business. Take it as a sign that you could do with some extra support.
What do you want to achieve?
Make a list of the things you most want to achieve over the next year or so, financially, professionally and personally. And then, for each goal, pinpoint at least one actionable step that you as a business owner can take to help achieve it.
